Small Kentucky CU OK After Storms Sweep Through

MAYFIELD, Ky.—The lone credit union in this small town was untouched by the deadly tornadoes that swept through the Midwest Friday night.

Staff at Your Hometown FCU told CUToday.info Monday morning their office was outside the path of the deadliest tornadoes. Mayfield, a city of approximately 10,000 people in the western corner of the state, was the hardest hit town.

An employee said the CU was operating Monday, but their systems were down. The branch was being run on generator power.

As CUToday.info reported, storms that dropped 80 tornadoes across Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi and Tennessee, killed at least 80 people, and up to a half-million people were without power at one point in those states plus portions of Michigan and Ohio. The death toll in Kentucky Monday was 64, with more than 100 people still unaccounted for.

Kentucky CU League President Debbie Painter confirmed again early reports indicate credit unions in this state avoided serious damage.

“Everyone is up and running in some form,” Painter told CUToday.info Monday. “In Bowling Green, Service One CU has two branches operating but still challenges with Internet and system platforms. All other credit unions in the surrounding areas are up and running.”
