Sign of the Times: What 1 CU Offered A Seminar On

KAILUA KONA, Hawaii–Credit unions frequently offer education on financial matters, but one CU led a seminar on something completely different: how to respond to an active shooter.

The $467-million Hawaii Community FCU offered a seminar to help educate local residents and visitors on how to protect themselves if they’re ever in a life-threatening situation involving violence, Big Island Now reported.

“Active Shooter: Protecting Yourself & Things to Know” was held at HCFCU’s Kaloko facility in Kailua Kona.

An increasing number of communities across the nation are losing family, friends and neighbors to random violence, the CU stated.

“It’s important for the sake of our families and friends that we take a proactive role in keeping our communities safe,” said Tricia Buskirk, HCFCU president and CEO. “These seminars provide key information on what to do and how to safeguard ourselves and our loved ones.”

The seminar was led by Lt. Thomas Shopay, commander, and Sgt. Greg Yamada, both of the Special Response Team of the Hawaii Police Department.
