INDIAN LAND, S.C.–Sharonview Federal Credit Union has announced a data breach that involves the compromise of member data.
The credit union has filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Massachusetts after discovering an unauthorized party was able to access an employee’s email account, according to JDSupra.com.
In the notice, the $1.7-billion Sharonview FCU stated the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, financial account numbers and Social Security numbers.
JDSupra.com reported that upon completing its investigation, Sharonview began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.
A review by CUToday.info does not show any information of the breach has been published on the credit union’s website.
What Filing Also Reveals
According to the JDSupra.com analysis, as the Sharonview FCU data breach was only recently announced, there are few details, but a review of the filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts “provides some important information on what led up to the breach.”
“According to this source, Sharonview Federal Credit Union recently learned that an unauthorized party was able to access an employee’s email account between August 28, 2023, and August 29, 2023,” JDSupra.com reported. “In response, Sharonview Federal Credit Union secured the email account and launched an investigation. Evidently, Sharonview believes that the goal of the unauthorized actor was to commit financial fraud against the company. However, the unauthorized party was able to access emails and attachments containing confidential member information.”
Review Conducted
JDSupra.com said additional information in the filing shows that after it learned sensitive member data was accessible to an unauthorized party, the credit union reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which members were affected. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include names, Social Security numbers and financial account information.
Sharonview FCU has approximately 96,000 members.
