WASHINGTON–The Senate has voted in favor of a temporary funding bill that will keep the federal government open through Feb. 8. The House is now expected to OK the compromise deal and President Donald Trump is expected to sign it, ending the government shutdown after three days.
The deal follows an announcement by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that he and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had reached an "arrangement." Details of the "arrangement" have not been released, but it likely centers around a compromise on immigration.
In a statement following the announcement, CUNA CEO Jim Nussle, a former congressman from Iowa, said, “We’re thankful that this situation has been resolved for the millions of credit union members affected by the shutdown. Credit unions embodied the ‘people helping people’ mantra over the past few days, reaching out to affected members in numerous ways to help them ensure financial stability, and it was inspiring to witness their dedication. CUNA will remain fully engaged to protect credit union funding priorities as negotiations continue for a more permanent funding solution.”
