MIAMI–A charter school co-founded by the performer Pitbull has received an $18-million loan from a credit union to begin construction on a new complex that will be its home.

The Sports Leadership and Management Academy said it has obtained a $17.97 million construction loan from Durham, N.C.-based Self-Help Credit Union for the complex, which will be built in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. The 80,552-square-foot building that will house the school will be located near professional baseball’s Marlins Park.

The new building is an expansion of the Sports and Leadership Academy, which already has a 137,936-square-foot building across the street that is part of Mater Academy. It offers sports leadership and management courses for students in 6th through 12th grade.

Pitbull, whose real name is Christian Perez, is a Miami native.
