Seattle’s CenturyLink Field, Minor League Park Latest to Offer Cashless Sales

SEATTLE—Two more sports facilities have announced changes in their shopping and payments experiences.

Seattle's CenturyLink Field has transitioned to cashless operations for sales transactions. The stadium is the home field for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League, Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer, and the Seattle Dragons of the XFL.

All concessions, retail and on-site parking will now only accept credit, debit and prepaid cards. The decision to go cashless stems from the success that other stadiums and event centers have seen with a cashless model, stadium officials told Q13 Fox TV.

The move is expected to speed up lines during events.

For visitors who don't have debit or credit cards or prefer to use cash, 10 cash-to-card kiosks will be located throughout the stadium and event center.

“These self-service kiosks are free to use and can convert as little as $1 cash onto a prepaid card, which can be used anywhere inside or outside the stadium,” Q13 Fox TV said.

Minor League Park ‘Cashierless’

Separately, in Worcester, Mass., with baseball season around the corner Standard Cognition said it plan to enable cashierless transactions at a minor league baseball stadium that’s home to the Worcester Red Sox.

A store with snacks, drinks, and souvenirs at Polar Park here will enable customers to shop without scanning or stopping to check out. Instead, they can pay for their purchases via Standard Cognition's mobile app, the Worcester Red Sox app, or in-store cash and credit card kiosks that automatically recognize their purchases, Pymnts.com reported.

Standard Cognition’s platform uses cameras and algorithms to keep tabs on customers as they shop. The technology can even prevent shoplifting, with its AI algorithms recognizing signs of theft from behaviors like trajectory, gait, gaze, and speed, Pymnts.com said.
