MASSENA, N.Y.–SeaComm FCU here has signed on as the first major sponsor for a well-known fishing tournament that will debut here in September.
SeaComm donated $5,000 to the Fishing League Worldwide bass tournament, set to take place at the Massena Intake and Massena Town Beach on the St. Lawrence River. As many as 300 anglers are expected to participate.
The tournament has previously drawn hundreds of anglers to Clayton, where it had been held before the town of Massena committed to sponsoring the 2019 Costa FLW Series northern division tournament from Sept. 19 to 21, according to local media.
“We believe a private/public partnership only strengthens our community’s efforts to bring events like the FLW to Massena in an effort to drive long-term sustainable tourism. We are pleased to work with (Councilman) Tom Miller and Don Meissner on this significant event and the opportunities it affords all of us,” said Seacomm President/CEO Scott Wilson. “The economic impact of this tournament will be beneficial to our entire region.”
Extensive Planning
According to the organization, preparation for the tournament will begin the week of Sept. 15, when a planning staff of approximately 45 visits Massena to begin the logistical work. Preregistration starts Sept. 18, but many of the contestants will have already arrived to scope out the field and look for the best areas to catch the prize-winning fish, local media said.
During the tournament, from Sept. 19 to 21, anglers will launch at 7 a.m. each day and return to the town beach by 3 p.m. to begin weighing in. Only the top 10 anglers will compete for the grand prize on Sept. 21.
