SeaComm FCU Distributes $50,000 in Heating Fuel Grants to Help Members

MASSENA, N.Y. – With a winter cold blast having hit the Northeast, SeaComm FCU is reporting it has now distributed $50,000 in grants to help some members cover the cost of heating fuel.

In an effort to help members in need, SeaComm pledged $50,000 in November 2022  to assist with home heating costs. The credit union said its members were invited to apply for the grant electronically through its website, by visiting one of its nine branch locations, or via mail service.

“At SeaComm, we’re focused on giving back to the communities in which we do business and making them a better place to live,” said President/CEO Scott A. Wilson. “Our winters can be harsh, so at a time where heat is absolutely necessary, we are happy to provide eligible members with the funds to assist with rising fuel costs.”

SeaComm FCU said it received nearly 1,000 applications received across Northern New York and Vermont, after which its Winter Fuel Grant Committee carefully selected 100 SeaComm members to receive fuel grants worth $500 each. Once selected, the recipients were notified, and the funds were distributed to local fuel providers for credit to their account.

According to SeaComm FCU, the application process provided an opportunity for individuals to explain what the grant would mean to them.

“This grant would be a huge blessing for my family as we are unsure about affording heat this winter,” one member said. Added another, “This grant would be incredibly helpful as my husband and I receive only social security and minimal pension benefits. It would reduce our worry and stress around affording our fuel.”

Many applicants stated they were on a fixed income and said they “cannot afford to pay for heat from what we get,” SeaComm FCU said.

Added Wilson, “Our members come first. We heard and felt the need in the community so we acted, because our members are family.”

The $775-million SeaComm FCU has more than 52,000 members.
