Scheduled Markup Cancelled on CU-Opposed American Privacy Rights Act

WASHINGTON—The House Energy and Commerce Committee cancelled its scheduled markup last week of legislation, including the American Privacy Rights Act.

As CUToday.info has reported, both America’s Credit Unions and the Defense Credit Union Council have expressed opposition to the legislation.

“While we appreciate the efforts in the APRA to create a national privacy standard, we believe the bill still needs to be improved before advancing in the legislative process,” ACU said in its letter to Congress.

ACU also argued in its letter the bill does not address credit union concerns regarding strong federal preemption of state laws, recognition of Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act standards, and protection from “frivolous lawsuits.”
