MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. — Scammers have been targeting members of Redstone FCU here by claiming to represent the credit union and indicating there is a problem with debit cards. At least one member has had their account cleaned out as a result.
According to the Guntersville Police Department, someone has been calling from a number appearing to be from RFCU saying they are seeking to resolve problems with the member’s debit card. One member who was scammed told the police she thought the call was legitimate because the caller had a lot of her information. When the scam caller asked her to verify her last four digits on the debit card and the security numbers on the back, the member provided the information.
She later looked at her account and discovered it had been wiped clean, according to police.
Authorities say she immediately went to Redstone Federal Credit Union and contacted police, and RFCU was able to get her money back.
Investigator Mike Turner says they traced the transaction on the local victim’s account to Broward County, Fla., and efforts are underway to track down the scammer.
