SAN DIEGO–The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl will not be played at the end of this college football season as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
"This has been the most difficult decision our board has ever had to make since our bowl game started in 1978," Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville said in a statement. "While it's not the decision we wanted to make, it's the right decision for our non-profit association and the community for the long term."
Played in San Diego every year since 1978, the SDCCU Holiday Bowl would not have been able to host fans at this year's game, which contributed to a unanimous vote to cancel by the game's board of directors.
The game was to pair teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Pac-12.
The bowl game, the only one sponsored by a credit union, was also to be played in San Diego County Credit Union Stadium, the one-time home to the San Diego Chargers and now home to San Diego State’s football program. But SDCCU Stadium is scheduled to be demolished and when the game returns it is expected to be played in Petco Park in downtown San Diego, home to the San Diego Padres.
