SAN DIEGO—San Diego County Credit Union is supporting the 2018 Chinese Lunar New Year.
Through March 2, SDDCU said all of its branch locations will have red envelopes (traditionally known as hong bao or lai see) for members who participate in the Lunar New Year celebration. Lunar New Year starts Feb. 16, 2018; this year is the Year of the Dog.
Based on the lunar calendar, the Lunar New Year takes place on a different date each year. Celebrations last for over two weeks and often include firecrackers and lion dances, the credit union said.
SDCCU explained that traditionally, red envelopes are given to children by their parents or family members wishing them health and good studies in the coming year. The red envelopes always have money enclosed, typically new bills, and are believed to bring good luck.
SDCCU said it is also participating in the Lunar New Year events that include the Lunar New Year Tet Festival at SDCCU Stadium on Feb. 9-11; UVSA Lunar New Year Tet Festival in Orange County on Feb. 16-18; VAYA Tet Festival in Mira Mesa on Feb. 16-18; and Chinese New Year Fair in downtown San Diego on Feb. 24-25.
