San Diego County CU Shreds Its Own World Record For Paper Shredding

SAN DIEGO—San Diego County Credit Union said it has set a new Guinness world record for the most paper shredded in eight hours.

As CUToday.info reported earlier, the credit union had announced plans to break its own world record for most paper shredded in eight hours, which is set in 2017 at a “Super Shred” event. It also holds the record for the most paper collected in 24 hours

The paper shredding company Shred-It shredded 239,060 pounds of paper on a Saturday during San Diego County CU’s 2019 Super Shred event at sports facility for which it holds naming rights, SDCCU Stadium.

"We thank everyone who came out to the SDCCU Super Shred event this past weekend and helped us achieve a new Guinness World Records title," said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Campbell. "SDCCU is pleased to not only achieve a new record, but to provide this much-needed, free service to the community."

Funds For Charity Also Collected

SDCCU said it also collected more than $5,000 for the Stuff the Bus program, which provides food to more than 22,000 homeless students around the county. SDCCU runs the program with the San Diego County Office of Education and local iHeartMedia radio stations.

Since it began holding paper shredding events in 2007, SDCCU reported it has shredded more than 4.3 million pounds of paper and saved residents nearly $500,000 in document shredding costs. According to the credit union, each shredding event helps thousands of residents dispose of their sensitive documents.

"With a greater prevalence of fraud and identity theft in recent years, it is becoming more and more important to properly dispose of confidential, personal information," Campbell said. "The first rule in preventing identity theft is, if you don't need it, shred it."
