SECU Employee Celebrates 50 Years on the Job, Has No Plans to Retire

GREENVILLE, N.C.–An employee of State Employees’ Credit Union is marking a rare milestone: 50 years with the credit union.

Rose Skinner was recognized for the silver anniversary during SECU’s board meeting in Wilmington, N.C.

She is the first person in the 87-year history of State Employees’ to have such tenure, according to Reflector.com.

“Rose Skinner has spent her entire career serving in Greenville, building strong relationships with our members, while training and mentoring many employees across the state,” said Mona Moon, SECU board chair. “She leads with a servant’s heart and is a shining example of the credit union philosophy of people Help people.’”

Skinner, 73, told Reflector.com she did not expect the recognition. Prior to the board of directors’ meeting, her coworkers hosted a surprise anniversary party.

‘Don’t Stop’

“My members who come in will say if you love what you are doing, don’t stop. This retirement is not what it’s cracked up to be. I wish I never left my job when I did. I can’t tell you how much I hear that,” Skinner told Reflector.com. “I always tell them I’ve heard them say if you stop moving you’ll lose it.”

Skinner joined SECU in 1974 at the age of 23.

“I didn’t know anything about the State Employees Credit Union,” Skinner told the publication. “I just knew the State Employees Credit Union would be an awesome place to start my career. That’s an understatement, it’s been one of the best things to happen to me.”

Skinner has been working from the same office for nearly all of her tenure.

Skinner is a financial service manager who manages and trains the tellers who work in the branch.

Favorite Part of Job

But she told Reflector.com the favorite part of the job is working as a teller and interacting with members, many of whom have known her for 30 or 40 years or more.

“I’m still working because I am a single person and with the economy the way it is, and the things I try to do to help people, I need to work and I don’t want to have to go out and work somewhere else because it will never match up to what I already have,” she told Reflector.com.
