RALEIGH, N.C.–In the wake of damage and flooding from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Florence, State Employees’ Credit Union’s SECU Foundation announced a grant of $1 million to the Feeding the Carolinas program to assist victims in the counties directly affected by the storm.
The grant will support the food banks that directly serve residents in areas where emergency assistance is greatly needed, helping to provide water, food, cleaning supplies, and other essentials, the SECU Foundation said.
SECU, which has a branch network across North Carolina, is among those credit unions that continue to work to open offices that are closed due to the storm, the resulting flooding and the inability of employees to get to work, as CUToday.info reported here.
“Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina with a vengeance and its impact will be long-lasting, especially in our southeastern coastal cities and inland towns,” said Cynthia Jolly, SECU Foundation board chair. “Many of our friends, families, and neighbors had to leave their homes and seek shelter just two years after the tremendous flooding and damage in our state from Hurricane Matthew. We know that food and supplies are needed quickly, which is why SECU Foundation has reacted immediately with funding to assist Feeding the Carolinas with delivering essential items to those hard-hit areas.”
On its website, SECU is reporting 13 branches are not open.
Mike Lord, CEO of the $38.3-billion SECU, said the credit union is “here to help” and that its member-founded Foundation is “making a difference in people’s lives, which is what SECU tries to do every day in serving our members.”
The National Credit Union Foundation, meanwhile, has opened CUAid to receive disaster relief funds to assist credit union people affected by Hurricane Florence.
Donations to CUAid are being used for any credit union employees and volunteers affected by this hurricane, according to the Foundation. Credit union supporters in every state can make donations at cuaid.coop.
