BATON ROUGE, La.—The Republicans have added another seat in the Senate.
As has been expected, GOP challenger Bill Cassidy, a doctor who was already in Congress as a member of the House, defeated three-term Sen. Mary L. Landrieu in a runoff election in Louisiana.
Although Landrieu won the multicandidate primary, edging out Cassidy, Louisiana law called for a run-off. Landrieu, 59, has been a credit union supporter while in office, including supporting bills that have been strongly opposed by banks.
The win will give the Republicans 54 seats in the Senate, up nine from what they hold now, and a 246-188 advantage in the House.
