FOSTER CITY, Calif.—The U.S. migration to EMV is marching steadily along, reports Visa, which announced there are now 326.8 million EMV cards in use.
Citing end-of-June statistics, Visa reported there are 1.3 million merchant locations on board with EMV, pointing out that 75% of those are small to medium-size businesses. Before the Oct. 1 liability shift deadline, many analysts predicted that small merchants would lag behind in the EMV conversion.
The data shows that now 28% of all merchants in the U.S. accept the chip cards
Visa noted that the number of payments using chip-based Visa cards totaled 483 million at the close of June and EMV payments accounted for about one-quarter of the total dollars spent using Visa cards.
