RICHMOND, Va.– Rep. A. Donald McEachin (D-VA.) has died, just weeks after winning reelection to Congress, with the trade groups issuing statements saying he had been a strong credit union supporter.
Rep. McEachin, who died of colorectal cancer, was 61.
McEachin had represented Virginia’s 4th District, which stretches from Richmond to the North Carolina line, since 2017. Before that, he had served nine years as a state senator and eight as a delegate.
A minister and lawyer, McEachin was only the third African American to represent Virginia in the U.S. House.
"We are saddened to hear of the passing of Rep. Don McEachin, a respected voice and dedicated champion for the Richmond area and south Central Virginia. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues. Credit unions and the League worked closely with Rep. McEachin for decades during his service in the Virginia General Assembly and Congress," said Virginia Credit Union League President/CEO Carrie Hunt. "He was a vocal advocate for the underserved, and he praised credit unions for our work to serve these vulnerable communities. We are grateful for the Congressman's many years of support for Virginia's credit unions."
‘Strong Credit Union Supporter’
Added CUNA President Jim Nussle, “Rep. McEachin was a strong credit union supporter who was always willing to meet with credit union leaders, particularly on ways we could work together to increase service to un- and underbanked communities. We’re very appreciative of his work with us, and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
