Renovations Underway On Iconic Building Purchased By Credit Union

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.–Since it was first announced in July 2015 that State Employees’ Credit Union planned to purchase a building that is something of an icon here—the former Blue Cross and Blue Shield headquarters—there has been much talk about the landmark’s future.

Saying it has held steadfast to its original plans to convert the property into a state-of-the-art data center, SECU is now reporting renovations are already underway.

While extensive work will be needed to remove asbestos and up-fit the property for occupancy, SECU said it is preserving the well-known architectural structure and even finding a new home for the fixtures and equipment through a donation to the Durham non-profit, Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers (TROSA), Inc.

According to SECU, TROSA is an innovative, multi-year residential program that enables substance abusers to be productive, recovering individuals by providing comprehensive treatment, work-based vocational training, education and continuing care.  Some of TROSA’s funding comes from the non-profit’s social enterprises, including a thrift store and moving and storage service.  SECU said it will donate a wide-range of items from the property’s overhaul to TROSA, including a refrigerator, desks, mirrors, office cabinets and light fixtures.

“We are pleased to have the renovations underway in Chapel Hill,” said Jamie Applequist, executive vice president of SECU branch operations. “Repurposing the contents of the building through TROSA is a great way to give back and helps us move forward with preparing this location for SECU’s data center.  We know there has been a lot of speculation regarding our intent for this property, but we want area residents to feel confident in our plans for this iconic structure and our commitment to the community and its citizens.”

The five-story building located at 1830 Chapel Hill Boulevard was originally constructed for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in the early 1970s, opening its doors in 1973.  State Employees’ Credit Union expects it will take approximately 12-18 months to complete the extensive renovation of the 43-year old property.
