Remote Notarization of Documents Made Permanent in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Penn.–Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf made permanent a law that allows remote notarization of documents, which was initially enacted initially as a temporary measure through the duration of the pandemic.

The legislation will allow notaries to notarize documents when the signer appears via audio-video communication, noted the CrossState Credit Union Association.

According to the CrossState CU Association, House Bill 2370, now Act 97, sponsored by Rep. Mark Keller, was one effort to assist with documents being notarized during the COVID-19 crisis. The legislation would allow notaries to perform acknowledgements, administer an oath or affirmation, witness or attest electronic signatures, and certify or attest a copy by using real-time communication, the trade group said.

“On behalf of Pennsylvania’s credit unions, we thank Rep. Keller and his colleagues in the House and Senate for making this temporary law permanent,” said Patrick Conway, CrossState president & CEO.  “By signing the law, Gov. Wolf delivered a much-needed solution to enable our member credit unions to continue to conveniently meet members’ needs.”

The CrossState CU Association said it is now working with the New Jersey Legislature to pass similar legislation in that state.
