Regulator Issues Warning Over Bogus Website Mimicking CU

SACRAMENTO, Calif.–California’s Department of Business Oversight is warning consumers of a bogus website that mimics that of a legitimate credit union.

According to the DBO, the site, LibertyStarCU.com, “closely resembles” that of Star One Credit Union in Sunnyvale, Calif. The site has since been “suspended.”

“LibertyStarCU.com claims to be operated by Liberty Star Credit Union, which is not a licensed credit union,” the DBO said in a statement. “The website also shows six Liberty Star branches in the San Jose area and includes a map identical to one on Star One Credit Union’s website. Star One Credit Union is licensed to operate in California. The libertystarcu.com site lists a New York area code and an ABA/Routing Number.”

Added the department, “The DBO urges consumers to exercise extreme caution before responding to any solicitation promoting loans or other offers from Liberty Star Credit Union.”
