EAST SANTA ROSA, Calif.–Redwood Credit Union here has partnered with a number of organizations to build and place into the community free “Little Public Libraries.”
The availability of the books is meant in part to help bring some happiness to many children here who lost their homes in the wildfires of October 2017.
At Hidden Valley Elementary School, six teachers and one staff member also lost their homes, while at a satellite campus the homes of 82 students were lost.
The new Little Free Library, near the corner of Chanate Road and Fitzpatrick Court, is modeled after a national trend, where passersby are encouraged to take a book and then leave a book.
The library sponsored by Redwood Credit Union has been created in the likeness of its redwood tree logo by Montgomery High School students, according to Redwood.
It’s one of nine free lending libraries that will be integrated into the community this year through a partnership with United Way Women United and the Career Technical Education (CTE) Foundation Sonoma County, with help from sponsors, local media reported.
Mitchell Carter, the school’s acting vice principal, said it is a welcome portal to reading, especially as the campus’ main library is closed in the summer.
