Purported ISIS Hack Extends Beyond SMCFCU

BUTTE, Mont.—The hackers who identified themselves as ISIS and took down the website of Southwest Montana Community FCU didn’t just limit themselves to the credit union.

On the same weekend that the SMCFCU site was hacked so that a message reading “Hacked by Islamic State we are everywhere,” so did websites ranging from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre in Ireland, the Emdora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, a Canadian Church and a Goodwill center in St. Louis.

As was the case with the Southwest Montana Community FCU site, a black ISIS flag image replaced the sites’ standard home pages.

The FBI continues to investigate the incidents, with authorities saying they believe the terrorist group is not involved, and instead it’s the work of a domestic hacker.

In the case of the credit union, no member data is believed to have been compromised.

A hacker group calling itself "Lizard Squad" has claimed responsibility for similar hacks of high-profile sites in recent months, including those of singer Taylor Swift in January and of PlayStation and XBox One in December.
