WASHINGTON–If you were hoping for a reprieve for at least a few more months, prepare to be disappointed—most of the 2022 primary elections begin today.
Twelve states will be holding primary elections this month, while Texas will hold a run-off election later this month.
Two midwestern states will hold their primaries today.
According to Trey Hawkins, deputy chief advocacy officer for political action for CUNA, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and the Ohio and Indiana leagues are backing 19 candidates in those two states who will be seeking to win their respective parties’ races today.
The closes race, Hawkins said, is expected to be in Ohio’s 11th district, where Rep. Shontel Brown (D-OH) is in a competitive rematch with Nine Turner. Brown won the seat in a special election after former Rep. Marcia Fudge was named by President Bident to lead HUD.
So far this year there has been just one primary, in Texas, where Hawkins said credit union-backed candidates won 23 of 24 races. The 24th race is in a runoff.
In addition, Hawkins said CUNA continues to promote its CreditUnionsVote.com campaign, which is designed to get members to exercise their democratic rights and vote.
