Primaries In 4 States Today; Here’s Who Credit Unions Are Backing

WASHINGTON–Primary elections are being held in four more states today, with CUNA and the respective state CU associations backing candidates in races in two of the states.

As CUToday.info reported here, credit union-backed candidates went two-for-four last week in their elections. Today, primaries will be taking place in Idaho, Nebraska, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

Trey Hawkins, VP-political affairs with CUNA, said the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) said the races in which it has been involved include:

  • In Idaho’s first district, where the seat has been vacated by Rep. Raul Labrador (R), who is running for governor, there is an eight-way race. CULAC and the Northwest Credit Union Association are backing candidate Russ Fulcher in the Republican primary.
  • In Pennsylvania, which Hawkins called an “interesting” state since all of the district lines were thrown out by a court due to gerrymandering and all new district lines have been drawn, five incumbents are retiring and two incumbents are facing off against each other. CULAC, along with the Pennsylvania CU Association, are involved in backing candidates in three races, including: Dan Mueser, running for the Republican nomination to represent the 9th district; Lloyd Smucker, the incumbent in the 11th district, and Guy Reschenthaler in the brand-new 14th district.
