ARLINGTON, Va.—The Trump and Clinton presidential campaigns are being closely monitored by NAFCU’s advocacy teams, which will continue to advance with both the need for regulatory relief for CUs and to preserve credit unions’ tax-exempt status, the trade group said.
“NAFCU has met with both presidential campaigns seeking the candidates’ support for the more than 103 million Americans who rely on credit unions to meet their financial service needs,” said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. “As these campaigns proceed, we will continue our efforts to advance specific relief from onerous rules that are driving up costs for credit unions with no clear benefit to credit union members. In addition, we remain focused on ensuring lawmakers and the next president understand the value credit unions bring to their members and to the nation’s economy as a whole.”
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump discussed his economic plans Monday before the Detroit Economic Club, where Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will return Thursday to do the same.
During his speech Monday, Trump said if he is elected, he will impose a moratorium on new regulations and roll back all unnecessary rules. “I will ask each and every federal agency to prepare a list of all regulations imposed on Americans that are not necessary, do not improve public safety and needlessly kill American jobs,” Trump said.
In other comments Monday, Trump said he would work to push through a plan for tax simplification along the lines of that proposed by House Republicans. Those plans should be unveiled in the coming weeks, NAFCU reported.
