WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump Wednesday did not rule out trying to remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, whom he has blasted for keeping interest rates high, but said it was “very unlikely” that he would do so, POLITICO reported.

Trump’s Wednesday remark followed a Tuesday night meeting in the Oval Office with a group of hard-line House Republicans who unanimously backed removing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, according to two people with direct knowledge of the discussion, POLITICO reported.

During the meeting, Trump worked to ease the group’s concerns over a central bank digital currency ahead of a key vote the next day. After receiving their support, he signaled that he was likely to remove Powell soon and even showed the group a draft letter outlining Powell’s dismissal, the sources told POLITICO.
