Police Officer Who Took Hostage Inside CU is Arrested

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – Police in Puerto Rico said they arrested a police officer after he took a hostage inside a credit union here. The hostage was eventually

released unharmed.

According to police, Puerto Rico Police Bureau officer Gabriel Hernández Jiménez, who is assigned to the Bayamón Highway Patrol Division, held a maintenance employee hostage inside Caribe Federal Credit Union Cooperative while carrying a firearm. There were 30 employees at the credit union who were evacuated.

Officers, including specialized units such as the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), and police negotiators were mobilized and managed to get Hernández Jiménez to voluntarily surrender, police said. His demands have not been made public.

The FBI is helping investigate the incident.
