Police Arrest 3 Suspects In Explosive Attacks On ATMs

SALT LAKE CITY–Police have arrested three suspects in a string of attacks in which explosives were used to break into ATMs.

As CUToday.info reported earlier, on at least three occasions in the Salt Lake City region thieves connected a propane tank to flood ATMs with gas, then left a trail of fuel they later lit in an attempt to blow open the machines.  The machines were destroyed but no cash was taken.

Brian Winters, 32, Christopher Izatt, 33, and Guillermo Cruz, 34, face federal charges of destruction of property by fire or explosive. The trio are allegedly the men behind attempted robberies at ATMs belonging to Golden West Credit Union, Chartway FCU, American First Credit Union and Zions Bank.

In January, investigators had released surveillance video that showed a red Toyota approach the ATM and a man getting out of the car near the ATM before a fire erupted.

Investigators said they were able to use evidence collected at the scene and the surveillance video to eventually track down the suspects.

Winters is charged in connection with the GoldenWest incident on Jan. 7. Izatt and Cruz are charged with the incidents at the American First Credit Union and the Chartway Credit Union, in addition to a fourth incident at a Zions Bank ATM in Draper on Jan. 21.
