POCATELLO — Several Pocatello police officers rushed to a local credit union branch Tuesday evening in response to what was initially believed to be a robbery, the Idaho State Journal reported.
Ultimately, police determined there was no robbery—just a Pocatello man who had fallen asleep in the credit union's restroom and woke up around 7:15 p.m. to find himself alone in the closed branch.
Security cameras at the Mountain America Credit Union on office the 1000 block of Yellowstone Avenue had detected the man walking around inside the building, setting off the branch's alarm system and triggering the police response, Idaho State Journal said.
A police dog was brought in, and officers prepared to enter the credit union around 8 p.m., expecting to arrest the suspected “robber.” However, as soon as police announced that the K9 would be released inside, the man immediately surrendered. After questioning him, officers learned that he had entered the restroom while the credit union was still open, fallen asleep in a stall, and only woke up after the branch had closed, Idaho State Journal said.
Police said the man panicked when he awoke and realized what had happened. He then set off the credit union's alarm system when he started walking around to find a way out of the locked building. Police briefly detained the man following his surrender and then released him, Idaho State Journal said.
