Plastic Card That Lights Up When Near Contactless Reader Wins Award

LITTLETON, Colo.—Plastic cards that use LED lights to illuminate when near a contactless reader have won the 2024 Élan Award of Excellence by the International Card Manufacturers Association.

The cards are manufactured by CPI Card Group. The awards were announced at the ICMA Expo.

According to CPI, its LED Cards feature embedded light emitting diodes (LEDs) that are activated when a card is close to a reader.

“The closer the card gets to the reader, the brighter the LEDs become, giving the user interactive feedback on the completion of their purchase,” the company said. “A power-harvesting antenna inside the card optimizes the LED light without impacting communication during the transaction.”
