Planning ‘Vigorous Oversight,’ CFPB Says It's Looking to Hire Attorneys

WASHINGTON–Under the headline “Calling Attorneys Interested in Joining the CFBP,” Acting Director Dave Uejio said the Bureau is looking to hire attorneys as it plans “vigorous oversight of all applicable federal laws and the fullest utilization of our legal authorities.”

The beefed up and aggressive posture is not likely to be welcomed by credit unions or their trade associations, which have been concerned over the direction that might be taken by the CFPB under the Biden administration.

“We are at a critical moment in our nation. Americans’ financial lives have suffered tremendously as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the associated economic dislocation, and ongoing racial inequity,” wrote Uejio in a posting on the CFPB website. “These challenges are most acute amongst the most economically vulnerable Americans.

“The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was created for moments like this. Born out of the Great Recession, the CFPB was forged in crisis to vigorously protect America’s consumers,” the posting continues. “Our mission is to help consumer finance markets work by making rules more effective, by consistently and fairly enforcing those rules, and by empowering consumers to take more control over their economic lives.”

‘Fullest Utilization’

“Achieving this goal requires vigorous oversight of all applicable federal laws and the fullest utilization of our legal authorities,” Ueijo stated. “We are, therefore, proud to launch an effort to recruit attorneys at all experience levels to join our team. Opportunities are available in multiple Bureau functions and, in appropriate circumstances, we may offer the potential to work remotely.”

Ueijo said the Bureau is seeking new hires who reflect the diversity of the American public, including a “diverse set of candidates with a range of personal and professional experiences.”

“We must hold accountable companies that break the law and harm American consumers and small businesses during this time of incredible financial stress,” Ueijo concluded. “To do this, we need the fullest talents and passion of the American public.”
