Plaintiffs Being Sought For Class Action Against CUs, Banks Over Alleged Lending Discrimination

PHOENIX–Plaintiffs are being sought for a class action lawsuit against credit unions and banks over alleged lending discrimination against people who are U.S. citizens but who have foreign ancestry.

According to a posting on TopClassActions.com, law firms are seeking those who have been turned down by credit unions or banks because “they don’t like your name, nationality or your legal right to be here? …The government is cracking down on banks and credit unions whose blatant bias against certain groups is devastating to individuals and communities. If you are a U.S. citizen with foreign ancestry, you may have been refused banking services because of your family background. For instance, one bank illegally refused applications from U.S. citizens of Armenian descent based on their last names.”

The latter is a reference to a lawsuit against Citi, which CUToday.info reported here.

‘You May Have Reasons to Complain’

“If you aren’t a U.S. citizen, you may have been refused credit cards and loans because of your nationality or your entirely legal immigration status despite strong ties to the United States,” the post on TopClassActions.com stated. “For example, if you have family ties to Iran, you, too, may have reasons to complain about American banks, which may, without warning, shut down your accounts. The same may be happening to many others.

“You might think that even if you are part of another group you could be facing illegal discrimination by banks simply because of your immigration status or national origin. You might be right,” the post added. “The government won’t stand for it. Neither should you.”
