PenFed Files Trademark Suit Over Logo

TYSONS, Va.–Pentagon FCU has filed a lawsuit against RoundPoint Mortgage Service Corp. that alleges trademark infringement.

PenFed alleges the pentagon shape used in its logo is protected under its trademark. According to the Washington Business Journal, PenFed sent a case-and-desist letter to Charlotte, N.C.-based RoundPoint Mortgage in August of 2017 that the company did not heed. In fact, the Washington Business Journal reported, RoundPoint Mortgage filed a request in October 2016 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office to cancel one of PenFed's pentagon trademarks.

PenFed was founded in 1935 as War Department FCU and said it has been using the pentagon shape—after the headquarters of the Defense Department—since 1947, when the famous building was completed.
