MELBOURNE, Fla.—The $3.2-billion Space Coast Credit Union here has proposed a $30-million expansion of its corporate offices here as part of a project it said would bring as many as 600 jobs to the location.
SCCU is looking to build three new three-story office buildings that will total 144,344 square feet, as well as a four-story, 500-vehicle employee parking garage. The credit union went before the Brevard County Commission last night seeking rezoning of the property to accommodate its plans. Some residents in the local Baytree area, a gated residential community, have objected to the scope of the project and the traffic it will bring. Approximately 60 Baytree residents had earlier turned out at a Baytree Community Development District Board of Supervisors meeting to express their opposition.
The credit union has said that if the project is rejected, it may move the office project to Miramar, Fla., near the former headquarters of Eastern Financial Credit Union, with which it merged in 2009. SCCU had earlier transferred 200 people from Miramar, which is near Miami, to the Baytree offices.
