Open To State Charters, But Focus Will Be on Federal Issues, Says NAFCU

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—NAFCU said it will not lose its focus on federal issues even as it moves to expand its membership to include state charters.

The group said it is seeking to codify its focus on FCUs as the association’s members vote on full membership for federally insured, state-chartered credit unions, according to NAFCU Chair Richard L. Harris.

NAFCU’s board has unanimously voted to amend the association’s articles of incorporation to allow its state-chartered members to vote on all NAFCU matters and to run and serve on the association’s board. It also approved revising the articles to reinforce NAFCU’s focus on federal issues for all federally insured members. The association’s voting members have until Sept. 9 to cast their vote on whether they accept these changes.
Harris said that NAFCU’s strength and purpose have always rested on the association’s focus on credit union issues at the federal level, and he said association President and CEO Dan Berger and his team will continue to work daily with that focus in mind.

“Dan Berger and his leadership team have been and will continue to be focused specifically on federal issues in their dealings with the White House, all federal regulators and agencies as well as Capitol Hill,” said Harris, president and CEO of Caltech Employees Federal Credit Union (Calif.).

NAFCU’s membership vote on the amendments to the articles of incorporation opened Aug. 10.
