One CU Literally Wrestling With Who Should Be New Promotional Partner

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - SPIRE Credit Union said it has entered into a new promotional partnership with Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA champion Gable Steveson, who today wrestles for the WWE.

Steveson began his competitive wrestling career at Apple Valley High School in Minnesota where he achieved multiple state titles, before joining the Gopher wrestling squad at the University of Minnesota, where he earned two NCAA championships, won three Big Ten championships, and still has the highest win percentage in the history of the wrestling program.

In March of 2022, Steveson took home his second Dan Hodge Trophy, a national award that honors the top collegiate wrestler each year.

In the summer of 2021, Steveson won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in the men’s freestyle 125-kilogram class. SPIRE noted that with less than 10 seconds left of the championship match, Steveson trailed his opponent by three points before, “in a dramatic fashion, he scored two two-point takedowns, one of them occurring with 0.3 seconds left on the clock.” This final takedown brought the final score to 10-8, and Steveson celebrated his win with his signature move – a backflip.

‘Authentic, Inspiring’

“Gable is an authentic, inspiring role model on and off the wrestling mat. He deeply believes in improving the lives of others and being a leader in his community,” said SPIRE President/CEO Dan Stoltz. “We’re looking forward to doing great things together through this partnership.”

With this new partnership, Steveson will be featured in SPIRE’s upcoming commercials, as well as other advertisements beginning this summer. Steveson will continue his wrestling career with the WWE.
