WASHINGTON–It is supposed to be a short week for the House of Representatives this week, but it could get much longer, as funding for the federal government is scheduled to expire again on Friday.
The House is scheduled to adjourn on Wednesday, with Democrats headed to Philadelphia for a retreat.
The government is supposed to run out of money on Friday March 11, but Jason Stverak, deputy chief advocacy officer with CUNA, said it’s likely funding will again pass Congress as part of an omnibus bill or, more likely, another continuing resolution.
It isn’t just funding for the federal government that is set to expire, so is authorization for the National Flood Insurance Program.
The two programs are linked together, and Stverak expects funding for both will be passed.
Those are hardly the only issues in front of Congress.
“As we have all seen, the news over foreign affairs and the war between Russia and Ukraine will continue to dominate events in Congress,” said Stverak.
Congress is looking at several aid packages for Ukraine.
Hearings
There are also two hearings of interest to credit unions in Congress this week, both of which are scheduled for today:
- Senate Committee on Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs: Examining Mandatory Arbitration in Financial Products
- House Committee on Financial Services: The Inflation Equation: Corporate Profiteering, Supply Chain Bottlenecks, and COVID-19
