Ocean Financial Pledges $500K to University for Fin Lit Initiative; Will Be Sponsor of Several Events

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y.–Ocean Financial Federal Credit Union said it is pledging $500,000 over a five-year period to Molloy University with an aim of improving the financial literacy of Molloy students. The funding also includes sponsorship of a number of high-profile events at the university.

The partnership was announced at Molloy University’s annual “Evening of Entertainment.”

“Our mission is to help our community thrive through an effective understanding of their finances so they can support others who need it,” said Joe Tedesco, president and CEO of Ocean Financial Federal Credit Union. “This partnership will increase students’ financial literacy and help them be more confident and comfortable with their financial journey after graduation.”

Variety of Initiatives

According to the $368-million credit union, the sponsorship will support a variety of initiatives, including:

  • Mentoring Latinas Financial Literacy Program: “A program specifically designed for Latina students at participating high schools to expose them to university life and engage them in relevant activities, including visits to academic departments, financial workshops, and athletic and cultural events. It also provides financial support to cover the cost of tutoring for Regents and SAT exams and cultural arts.” Ocean Financial said it will provide financial literacy seminars with program participants and family members of Mentoring of Latinas and will be recognized as the principal corporate sponsor.
  • Business Graduate Internship Scholarship for Marketing and Communications. The credit union said an internship is being created at Ocean Financial where each year, an undergraduate business student (continuing their graduate education in Molloy University’s School of Business) will work at the CU to support a marketing initiative to engage the Latinx and underrepresented communities in their offerings and products. A stipend for each semester will be allocated to a student for this purpose, OFCU added.
  • Corporate Event Sponsorship. Ocean Financial said this includes sponsorship of key annual corporate events at Molloy University, including the Molloy University Gala, the Molloy Annual Golf Classic, the Molloy University Evening of Entertainment, and the Conversation (Women’s Networking Initiative). This also includes corporate recognition of all pre- and post- publicity for events and printed material, banner display, Ocean Financial said.
  • Madison Theatre Box Office Sponsor: Visibility of Ocean Financial logo on Madison Theatre Box Office and in all playbills.
