Numerous Members Targeted in Jobs Scam With Bogus Checks

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Pathways Financial Credit Union is reporting scammers have been using their credit union to issue fake checks.

In the last two weeks, the credit union has declined about 50 checks, according to a new report.

The credit union reported the issue to the Columbus Division of Police, but they said people have been trying to cash the checks from all over the country, 10TV reported.

“There are bad actors out there counterfeiting our corporate checks,” President and CEO Greg Kidwell told 10TV.

The report noted most of the people who have been scammed are calling the bank with the same story. It starts by people looking for a job online.

‘Portals’ Being Used

“The individuals we have communicated with have indicated they are using portals or different outlets to search for remote work or at home jobs,” said Pathway Financial’s   Chrissy Martino was quoted as saying.

Martino told the news outlet the CU had one man come into the credit union with a letter from the fake company.

“Just by starting to read (the letter) there were multiple typos, the grammar (was not correct),” Martino was quoted as saying.

The scam is one CUToday.info has reported on previously, and is common in targeting consumers. The victims are told they have been offered a job with significant pay, including an upfront payment via a bogus check.

They are told to deposit the check and send funds back to the sender.
