HONG KONG—In what may be a big step in the fight against fraud, more than one-billion smartphones will ship next year with a fingerprint scanner.
Security experts have advised credit unions, and all financial institutions, to step up their account holder authentication processes, suggesting fingerprint scanning as one of the methods employed.
Fingerprint scanners were first introduced four years ago, and research firm Counterpoint now projects that more one billion smartphones will be shipped in 2018 with a fingerprint sensor.
“The fingerprint scanner, which was popularized by Apple starting with the iPhone 5s model, has been adopted by every smartphone manufacturer. Moving forward, it is likely to be the standard authentication choice for smartphone OEMs,” noted Gadgets 360.
Samsung, Apple, and Huawei continue to be among the frontrunners among smartphone makers in distributing handsets with a fingerprint scanner, Gadgets 360 noted.
In the second quarter of 2017, which ended in June, Samsung topped the chart among phone makers for shipping 12% of all smartphones with a fingerprint sensor. Apple and Huawei had 11% and 8% market share respectively, Gadgets 360 noted.
