North Of The Border It’s Getting Chilly Between Walmart, Visa

MISSISSAUGA, Canada—The battle between Walmart stores in Canada and Visa has escalated, with the retailer saying it will stop accepting Visa credit cards at its 16 stores in Manitoba in late October, USA Today reported.

Walmart and Visa are divided over the transaction fees Visa charges in Canada, where Walmart operates more than 400 stores. As CUToday.info previously reported, Walmart this summer stopped accepting Visa at three of its stores in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove told USA Today that Walmart is "working to keep prices low" for shoppers. "Unfortunately Visa has not been willing to provide a reasonable rate to continue accepting their cards. We believe credit card fees should be lower for everyone, whether they're a large retailer, small business or charity."

Visa in a statement called Walmart’s decision "disappointing," but said the company "remains committed to actively working with Walmart so that Canadians can use their Visa cards wherever they wish to shop."
