ALBANY, N.Y.—The board of the New York Credit Union Association has become the latest to vote in favor of giving affiliated credit unions a “choice” of belonging only to the NYCUA without having to join CUNA.
The change in membership requirements will take effect Jan. 1, 2016.
The NYCUA said the decision came after a survey of 169 CU leaders in the state found that 80% support having a “choice” in membership.
The New York decision, which follows several similar votes at other state leagues, comes at the same time the CUNA board has announced it plans to put in front of all CUNA-affiliated member CUs a proposal that would give credit unions the option of belonging to only their state league, only to CUNA, or to the traditional league/CUNA model.
“The action by the New York Credit Union Association’s board demonstrates a commitment to being responsive to our members and a move forward for this organization,” said NYCUA President and CEO William J. Mellin in a statement. “I want to recognize the CUNA Board for their leadership in initiating the process to modernize their membership requirements. I also commend the Association Board for their leadership and the approach they took in responding to our members and working with CUNA to modernize membership requirements.”
