New Treasury Secretary Expected to Bring New Scrutiny to Cryptocurrency

Janet Yellen

WASHINGTON—Cryptocurrencies are likely to come under renewed regulatory scrutiny over the next four years if new Treasury Department Secretary Janet Yellen gets her way.

During Yellen’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee, Yellen shared, “Cryptocurrencies are a particular concern. I think many are used—at least in a transactions sense—mainly for illicit financing.”

Yellen added that she wants to "examine ways in which we can curtail their use and make sure that [money laundering] doesn't occur through those channels."

As CUToday.info has reported, the spread of cryptocurrencies continues from a variety of sources, including governments and big banks.
