New Congressional Leadership Begins To Take Shape

WASHINGTON—As Republicans and Democrats select their leaders during the 115th Congress, Senate Democrats have elected Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as minority leader, replacing outgoing Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV).

Also, Senate Republicans re-elected Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as majority leader, NAFCU reported.
NAFCU said its lobbyists are on the Hill all week meeting with returning lawmakers and new members-elect as they push for regulatory relief and other top credit union goals. “NAFCU is anticipating a productive year working with long-time and newly arrived credit union friends in Congress,” said NAFCU Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler.
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) will continue as minority whip and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) will serve as assistant Democratic leader. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Mark Warner (D-VA) will serve as caucus vice chairs, and former Democratic primary candidate Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will serve as chair of outreach, NAFCU reported.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) will continue as majority whip.
Earlier this week House Republicans nominated Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) to continue in his leadership position. House Democrats will elect party leaders during the last week of November.
