National CU Foundation Commits Minimum of $100K To Help CU Employees Affected by Hurricane

WASHINGTON–The National Credit Union Foundation said it is committing a minimum of $100,000 from its CUAid program to support Louisiana-based credit union employees and volunteers affected by Hurricane Ida.

According to the NCUF, a grant will be made to the Louisiana Credit Union League (LCUL) to coordinate specific individual donations to those affected by the hurricane who are in need of disaster relief.

“CUAid is the most effective tool the Foundation has to respond rapidly in moments of crisis,” said Danielle Brown, director of engagement at the Foundation. “By distributing immediate funds to our colleagues in need, we’re bringing help directly to those impacted by Hurricane Ida.

“Ida is still wreaking havoc across the eastern seaboard, and we’re actively working with other organizations in those areas to identify need,” Brown added. “It will be some time until we know the full extent of damage, but we can support our credit union peers in Louisiana right now.”

The Foundation noted it runs the CUAid program to support credit union employees when natural disaster strikes. It was restructured in 2017 to provide immediate response when disasters occur.

“Hurricane Ida has impacted more than half of the credit unions in our state,” added Angela Melle, vice president of member engagement at the Louisiana league. “CUAid demonstrates that the credit union movement is more than just words – we’re about action, purpose and support for one another. It’s truly living up to the mission of ‘people helping people’.”

Use CUAid App

The Foundation said CUs  affected by Hurricane Ida and those in neighboring states are encouraged to download the CUAid app,  which is available from the apple and Google Play stores. The app facilitates the sharing of vital equipment and resources in the event of a disaster, helping credit unions support their employees and communities through catastrophe, the Foundation noted.

Individuals and others can donate to CUAid here.
