Nancy Pelosi, First Female House Speaker, To Retire From Congress Next Year

SAN FRANCISCO—Nancy Pelosi, the trailblazing first woman to serve as Speaker of the House and one of the most influential figures in modern U.S. politics, announced Thursday she will retire from Congress at the end of her current term.

The 85-year-old San Francisco Democrat, who surprised many by seeking a 20th term in 2023 after her party lost control of the House, had faced mounting calls to make way for a new generation of leaders. Her decision comes as she confronts a more competitive primary field than in years past, POLITICO said.

“I will not be seeking re-election to Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative,” Pelosi said in an emotional video message to her constituents, POLITICO reported.

A master strategist whose political acumen shaped decades of Democratic victories and legislative milestones, Pelosi had long sidestepped questions about her future. Her announcement follows California voters’ approval of a new congressional map expected to strengthen Democratic advantages in next year’s elections, POLITICO added.
