DENVER–Denver linebacker Brandon Marshall, who was dropped as a spokesperson by Air Academy FCU after he took a knee during the playing of the national anthem prior to a game, said he was surprised at the decision to let him go, but also happy to have now picked up a new endorsement.
In addition to Air Academy FCU, CenturyLink also terminated its relationship with the player as the result of his decision to express his opinion by kneeling.
“I didn’t breach my contract. I didn’t get arrested, I didn’t do anything to defame the team or CenturyLink or Air Academy. I just exercised my first amendment rights and they drop me for that,” Marshall told local media.
In the wake of the lost spokesperson deals entertainment mogul Russell Simmons said he will sign Marshall to endorse the “RushCard,” a prepaid Visa card.
“For Russell Simmons to come up and step in, I think that’s great,” said Marshall. “I’m proud of what I did because I didn’t do anything that’s wrong or hurtful by any stretch.”
