NCUA Opens Floor To Public On Dade County FCU Charter Bid; Legal Cloud Looms

SWEETWATER, Fla.—NCUA announced it will hold a public hearing on a request from the $1.4-billion, 105,485-member Dade County FCU to expand its existing community charter.

The agency, in a notice in the Federal Register, is requesting comments from interested stakeholders regarding whether the area qualifies as a well-defined local community.

The hearing will be held on Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. ET.

Interested parties seeking to make presentations during the hearing must register by Aug. 26, to be placed on a list of presenters, NCUA said.

“The first six interested parties that contact the NCUA in writing will be permitted to make such presentations. Members of the public seeking to watch or listen to the virtual meeting must register to view the public hearing,” NCUA stated in the notice.

Written comments must be submitted by Aug. 26.

While NCUA has set a date for the hearing, the federal lawsuit following President Trump’s removal of Board Members Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka earlier this year could impact any decisions handed down during the public hearing. The case, currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, challenges the legality of the removals and questions the validity of actions taken by the NCUA board while operated under a single board member.
