NCUA Finds Itself On List of ‘Ridiculous Regulations’ (For a Non-Regulation)

WASHINGTON–NCUA has found itself listed as part of the “Week in Ridiculous Regulations” in Washington, although in the agency’s case it wasn’t about a new regulation, it was about an internal department name change.

According to the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a libertarian think tank that advocates for limited government, NCUA made the list for changing the name of its long-time Office of Public and Congressional Affairs to the Office of External Affairs and Communications. The change was approved at a recent NCUA board meeting, as CUToday.info reported here.

The name change also came with approval to budget for four new positions within the department.

Meanwhile, the Competitive Enterprise Institute said its tally of new regulations as published in the 2019 Federal Register through July shows the number will likely “crack the 40,000-page mark.”

Last week, the Competitive Enterprise Institute said, 67 new final regulations were published in the Federal Register, up from 61 the previous week.

A New Reg Every 2.5 Hours

“That’s the equivalent of a new regulation every 2 hours and 31 minutes,” the organization said. “Federal agencies have issued 1,739 final regulations in 2019. At that pace, there will be 2,824 new final regulations. Last year’s total was 3,367 regulations.

According to the CEI, the 2019 Federal Register totals 39,722 pages to date and is on pace for 64,484 pages. The 2018 total was 68,082 pages. The all-time record adjusted page count (which subtracts skips, jumps, and blank pages) is 96,994, set in 2016, according to the Competitive Enterprise Institute.
